The Recession - Some Helpful Hints

Do you worry about money and how you are going to manage? Does this increase your stress and decrease your energy levels? Would some helpful hints be useful? If so, please read on.

Talk about money and finance can have quite a deep effect on our personal psyche which can often be hard to explain. Before trying to figure out what to do, we will try and put this experience into context. To do this we need to first talk a little about our brain. The reptilian brain is a part of the human brain which governs the survival instinct and is said to be there for millions of years throughout our evolution as a species. The survival instinct may seem to be out of context to our lives now since we are no longer in danger of being chased by dangerous wild animals.

However, our survival instinct becomes activated when any of our basic needs are under threat. Our basic survival needs are for food and shelter. In today's world we need money to provide food and shelter - so when there is a major focus on money, as there has been for the last while, our psyche becomes concerned about our survival. The brain sends signals to the body - 'get ready for fight or flight' - adrenaline is released and all our particular individual symptoms of stress appear. By this stage our reptilian brain has grown from a tiny insignificant lizard, into a powerful force that seems to be able to defy our everyday capacity for reasonable and logical thought.

By now you may be thinking this is all sounding quite hopeless? Desperate even? Bear with me... we have set the context, now let us take a look at some helpful hints to put our little lizard back in its box.

Hint 1 - Do a reality check. Since the survival instinct is there to keep us safe - we need to first check for danger and respond appropriately. When you feel stress or worry about survival issues - ask yourself 'have I enough to eat today?' 'have I shelter?' 'Is there any immediate danger to me right now?' These questions are the safety checks - by checking your warning signals to the immediate reality around you.

Hint 2 - If you are in danger - ACT - If the house is on fire - get out... If someone is threatening you - go for help...

Hint 3 - If you are not in danger - notice the gap between the fantasy your survival instinct has created and your reality RIGHT NOW!

Hint 4 - Repeat this process over and over as often as you need to.

Hint 5 - Smile and know that your survival instinct is always close by when you are dealing with money and financial issues. This seems to be true even for people who have more than adequate means to cater for their survival needs.
