What happens at the first psychotherapy meeting?

This is a general overview of how I will approach my first meeting with you.

I will invite you to tell me:
Why you have come.
What you would like to achieve by meeting with me.

Having listened carefully I will map out what I think best meets your needs. My aim is to give you enough information to enable you to decide if what I am offering is what you want at this time.

During our conversation you will have an opportunity to respond to whatever I have outlined. Any enthusiasm, doubts or fears you may have are very relevant so we give time to acknowledge these. Your questions are also important so we give time to these as well.

By the end of the first meeting you should have enough information to make a reasonably informed decision on whatever is the correct next step for you. These generally include:
Deciding to meet again to begin our work together.
Deciding to go away and take time to think about what we have discussed.
Realising that this is not what you need right now.

Irrespective of the decision made, people generally find this first meeting to be a useful and helpful experience.

If you are still unsure please give me a call and I will be happy to answer any questions you may have. There is no such thing as a stupid question. If what you need is beyond the service I offer, I will do my best to make some suggestions where I am able to do so.
